![]() Mike Beck In my work, I focus on (1) marine ecoregional planning, (2) marine proprietary rights (e.g., leasing and ownership of marine resources) and (3) temperate coastal conservation and restoration. Much of my work in Mediterranean ecosystems is in the giant kelp forests of Big Sur, California, including research with kelp harvesters to examine the effects of kelp canopy loss on juvenile rockfish. In addition, I recently published a paper with an Italian colleague on the... ![]() Rebecca Shaw There is exciting and innovative conservation work taking place in all the Mediterranean regions of the world, and there is tremendous value to cross-regional dialogue and collaboration. We hope that through the Global Mediterranean Action Network we can increase the pace, scale and effectiveness of conservation of Mediterranean habitats across the world... ![]() Isabel Granillo One of my accomplishments in Baja California has been bringing together a number of local and regional conservation NGOs and governmental agencies to work formally in collaboration to foster conservation of both San Quintín Bay and Isla Guadalupe. This Coalition for the Protection of San Quintín Bay has already applied for Ramsar designation of San Quintín, developed the second version of a study to declare it as a Natural Protected Area, applied to get concession of the Federal Maritime Zone around its main wetlands and conducted environmental education workshops and research around bird habitat conservation. ![]() Frank Davis Since earliest childhood I've always spent a lot of time outdoors and I have a deep curiosity about and reverence for the mystery, diversity and complexity of nature. Scientific research has many rewards. Moreover, I have the pleasure of interacting with lots of people who inspire me with their knowledge, creative ideas and their sense of purpose... ![]() Jon E. Keeley My research is focused on fire ecology and fire history of California and other parts of the Western U.S. One of the primary ecological problems of interest is how fire favors non-native species in these fire-prone ecosystems. In addition, I am interested in seeing the best conservation practices applied to our native ecosystems so I do extensive work on fire management practices and their impact on fire regimes and ecosystem functioning. ![]() Phil Rundel While my core research area lies with the physiological ecology of plant adaptations to environmental stress, my work has broadened over the years to include a range of studies not only in this field but also in looking at the biogeographic patterns of speciation in mediterranean-climate regions and increasingly into the conservation biology of these regions. ![]() Dawit M. Zeleke I have worked for The Nature Conservancy for 15 years and currently manage a team of 40 staff working in partnership with rural communities, agriculture, cities, state and federal agencies. The team plans and implements conservation on three important river systems, the San Francisco Bay-Delta, grasslands, blue oak woodlands and Sierra Nevada forests. ![]() Guy Preston I am strongly committed to environmental conservation and social justice, and make every effort to “walk the talk,” such as in the conservation measures and practices adopted in my home (eg, measuring water consumption on a daily basis). In my personal time, I enjoy music, jogging, going to the gym, hiking and spending time with my wife and two sons. ![]() Mandisa Mangqalaza I started my career in Natural Resource Based Development Programmes in the Working for Water Programme in the Eastern Cape, employed as the Social Development Coordinator in Independent Development Trust (IDT). Before that, I was employed as an assistant teacher, Head of Department for Languages... ![]() Richard M Cowling These days, most of my research deals with identifying and implementing ways of securing the conservation and sustainable management of ecosystems, with particular emphasis on those that deliver services to humans. Since “research for implementation” is a social process, my interests are veering towards the social sciences. ![]() Sedat Kalem Although I was theoretically aware that there are other Mediterranean Climate regions in the world (in addition to the Mediterranean Basin, where I am from), I used to feel “too far away,” not only physically but also psychologically. The network is trying to close this gap and bring people from different parts of the world around the common interest of Mediterranean biome’s survival. Being part of this dedicated squad gives me the sense of “ability” in my conservation challenge. ![]() Salit Kark The fact that some of our ideas and work can later be translated to actions and can be used for better conserving biodiversity and making this world a better place for our kids and for many other baby and adult animals in their native savannas, forests, seas and many other places... ![]() Bachir Raissouni My goal is to keep a balance between nature and humans, to address the challenge of sustainable development and conservation. I spend my free time traveling around the world and promoting environmental values, hiking and being involved in my community... ![]() Bruno Carlo Ravaglioli My experience is in economic feasibility studies for environmental and agricultural projects. In 1991 – 1992 I spent one year in Mozambique as a junior consultant for the Development Programme for the area of Maputo. From 1992 to 1995 I was involved in WWF activities, responsible for the administration of the Mediterranean Wetlands Conservation project on behalf of WWF Italy. During this period I was also freelance for socio-economic analysis and cost benefit-analysis.... ![]() Pedro Regato I am inspired by my past academic career, my years of work as the Head of the Forest Unit at WWF-Mediterranean Programme, and my deep knowledge of Mediterranean forest and mountain ecosystems. I work as an international consultant in the field of nature conservation, more specifically in the protection, management and restoration of Mediterranean forest ecosystems... ![]() Yoav Sagi Collaboration among conservationists and scientists is always an important and strengthening instrument. Collaboration among Mediterranean conservationists who are facing similar conditions and challenges is even more important. The Global Mediterranean Action Network could be an excellent vehicle for collecting and analyzing data and for sharing experiences gained in the different Mediterranean-type... ![]() Hugh Possingham My lab includes six postdoctoral researchers and fourteen Ph.D. students working on empirical and theoretical aspects of the applied population ecology of plants and animals. Particular areas of recent research include marine reserve design (including development of MARXAN, the software that underpinned the rezoning of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park)... ![]() Kerrie Wilson Melbourne, Australia Director of Conservation for the Australia Program of The Nature Conservancy I have worked with several NGOs, including The Nature Conservancy, on large collaborative projects that involved both academics and conservation practitioners. These opportunities have shaped my career path, at least in the short-term, as I work towards bridging the research-implementation gap in Australia. From an academic perspective, I have been pleased to find my research published in numerous top scientific... ![]() Richard Hobbs Perth, Australia and Stanford, USA Australian Professorial Fellow, Murdoch University My particular interests are in vegetation dynamics and management, fragmentation, invasive species, ecosystem rehabilitation and restoration, conservation biology and landscape ecology. My current research focuses on setting and achieving realistic goals for conservation and restoration in a rapidly changing world. I work predominantly in southwestern Australia but also carry on... ![]() Grant Wardell-Johnson Brisbane, Australia Senior Lecturer, The School of Natural and Rural Systems Management, The University of Queensland My areas of expertise include Natural Resource Assessment, Ecology and Biodiversity Conservation. Core skills in Ecology include Ecological Management and Monitoring, as well as Disturbance, Community and Restoration Ecology. I have wide experience in biogeographical survey... ![]() Cheryl Gole Perth, Western Australia Southwest Australia Ecoregion Manager for WWF-Australia I'm inspired by people who believe passionately in the value of our natural land and seascapes and work hard to ensure we save them for the future. And I'm inspired by those who can at the same time see that social justice is an integral part of what it is to be human. ![]() Pablo Marquet Santiago, Chile Professor at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, an associate investigator in the Center for Advanced Studies in Ecology and Biodiversity (CASEB), and for the Institute of Ecology and Biodiversity (IEB) My primary research interests lie in the areas of macroecology and ecological complexity. The main focus here is the search for the general principles that underlie the seemingly endless complexity, diversity and variability of ecological systems...
