  • Only 4.3% of the biome has been protected, while 31% has been converted for urban development and high-impact agriculture. Grazing, invasive species, and rural development are putting stress on the remaining areas.

  • Tourism, agriculture and population growth have reduced ecosystems to fractions along coastal plains and interior rangelands. Disease and pollution have damaged oak woodlands, and future regeneration is in doubt.

  • Wheat cultivation has caused the large-scale clearing of woodland, shrubland and mallee habitats, while salinization threatens wetlands, floodplains, riparian areas and valley floors.

What can you do?

  • Get your hands dirty – plant native trees. Become carbon neutral. Volunteer with Greening Australia.

  • Natural habitats in coastal regions have been reduced to small refuges, while air and water pollution have increased due to population growth. Key areas of the Iberian peninsula and North Africa have been lost to intensive agriculture and development.
