There's Hope
© Basak Avcioglu Key StrategiesGovernments, private entities, nonprofit organizations and alliances of partners around the world are engaged in biodiversity conservation, across multiple scales, throughout much of the Mediterranean Biome. Conservation strategies employed in each region fall within the broad categories outlined by the Conservation Measures Partnership which include: land and water protection (e.g., land acquisition), land and water management (e.g., habitat restoration, site management), species management, education and awareness, law and policy, livelihood, economic and livelihood alternatives, and external capacity building. Key OpportunitiesIn each of the world’s five mediterranean regions, the impact of threats to native biodiversity continues to outpace that of the suite of conservation strategies currently being implemented. The following relatively new approaches for conservation planning and action could help to transform the conservation context at both the global and regional scales. Existing Conservation PrioritiesConservation priority areas within each region have been identified by a variety of governmental, non-governmental and research based organizations. These in-depth and important conservation blueprints and strategic frameworks were created to reach the objectives of conserving biodiversity in the Mediterranean.
