I am a woman of algerian origin (embracing Berber, arab and mediterranean cultures) and Afro-mediterranean heart, a forest ecologist, working since May 2000 for WWF Mediterranean Programme, in Rome, coordinating forest conservation projects and teams. I have been leading since 2004, the development and implementation of the WWF cork oak landscapes programme. I provided and/or led organization of trans-national training, reports and publications prepared by WWF and partners. Prior to joining WWF, I was employed for 3 years by UNDP as a sustainable development advisor for the Maghreb countries, based in Algiers. I like the smells, colours and flavours of the Mediterranean ! I love interacting with people, culturally as well as socially. I like singing ... may be one day we should build a mediterranean singers network with different mediterranean languages. Love cooking and hiking in the mediterranean sea of mountains and deserts.
I am interested in increasing and sharing my knowledge on conservation of mediterranean habitats, building synergies with all mediterranean habitats programmes and teams. I am leading the WWF cork oak landscapes programme aiming at conservation of these habitats using tools such as FSC certification along the cork market chain for the forest to the wine bottle/other cork products. I have interest in understanding/ testing Payments for environmental services in these landscapes, working also towards the support of north africa countries in implementing their PoWPA, forest landscapes restoration, responsible and community-based forest management.

With a background in vegetation ecology, I have worked in The Nature Conservancy's California science program for two decades. My focus has been 1)helping to develop the organization's ecoregional planning methodology, 2)identifying priority sites for conservation within California and Baja California, 3)working with practitioners to plan and implement conservation-on-the-ground using a mix of strategies including land use policy, land acquisition, and private conservation easements, and 4) helping complete TNC's global mediterranean habitat assessment and launching the mediterranean action network website.
I am particularly interested in extending my skills to expand the network of conservation lands in the mediterranean zones of Chile, California and Mexico.

I have the great honor of being The Nature Conservancy's Director for Global Mediterranean Habitat Conservation. I serve as TNC's champion to advance the conservation of the highly threatened and extremely biodiverse mediterranean biome worldwide. I'm known jokingly by my nickname in Spanish- Jefe - and have worked in conservation around the world for 20 years. I came to the Conservancy in 1997 after receiving National Science Foundation and American Association for the Advancement of Science fellowships, and work at the US Agency for International Development on environmental conservation issues. I've had several posts at The Nature Conservancy, primarily in roles championing the Conservancy?s science, conservation planning and measures, and protected areas work, inside and outside of the United States.
I have a particular interest in our the engagement of new partners in the mediterranean's productive sectors like agriculture, and creating new innovative allies in the effort to conserve mediterranean habitats worldwide.
I live with my wife and 2 daughters in Colorado, hold a Ph.D. in Ecology from Brown University, and am fluent in Spanish. When not traveling the world, i love to cycle, hike, and telemark ski.

I have managed the Capenature Stewardship Program since its inception in 2003. The program's primary focus has been to leverage landowner and sector investment in the globally signifcant biodiversity of the Cape Floral Kingdom, the Succulent Karoo and other associated habitats of the Western Cape, South Africa. Key areas of interest include the understanding and implimenting of legal and incentive mechanisms which provide investment platforms and incentives to behavoural change in landowners respectively. Prior to my involvement with the stewardship program I have managed protected areas in Mediterranean systems for20 years with a focus on fire and invasive alien plants.

These days, most of my research deals with identifying and implementing ways of securing the conservation and sustainable management of ecosystems, with particular emphasis on those that deliver services to humans. Since "research for implementation" is a social process, my interests are veering towards the social sciences. My other major interest is plant diversification, especially the role of climatic and geomorphic dynamics as drivers of lineage radiation.

My research focuses on understanding the patterns and processes shaping biodiversity and their implications for conservation in a changing world, with focus on Mediterranean ecosystems, and especially the Mediterranean Basin. I focus on biodiversity along species ranges and ecological gradients as well as in biodiversity in human-dominated landscapes. This includes studies on both native and introduced species in natural, agricultural and urban environs. Currently, I am coordinating a large project aimed at running a conservation planning exercise in the Mediterranean Basin, combining biodiversity, threats, social and economic factors, together with scientists at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the University of Queensland (The Ecology Centre).
I am a Senior Lecturer and Head of the Biodiversity Research Group at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem since 2002. Before then I was a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University for three years, working with Harold Mooney, Paul Ehrlich and Gretchen Daily, and collaborated with Tom Smith from the Center for Tropical Research at SFSU (currently at UCLA).

I have spent the last 3.5 years working as the primary GIS analyst for the Global Mediterranean Habitat Analysis conducted by The Nature Conservancy, California. I live in Oakland, California, and I love the rolling green (in the winter) and gold (in the summer) hills of the Mediterranean woodlands in the East Bay Hills. Prior to working at The Nature Conservancy, I obtained a Masters Degree in City Planning at the University of California, Berkeley. I grew up in Maine, but it will be hard for me to move out of the Mediterranean biome now.

My background is in spatial analysis and conservation planning. My academic training is in Geography with a focus in landscape ecology, particularly in forested ecosystems. I have had various opportunities to conduct research and develop analyses to support conservation organizations from the grassroots to large international organizations, such as the Nature Conservancy, where I now work.

Working in natural resource management in a Mediterranean hotspot, I am interested in learning about how others elsewhere are dealing with their environmental issues, as well as sharing information and experiences. Have worked in NRM for almost 30 years, in countries all over the world, and the issues are becoming frighteningly urgent.

A retired US National Park Service management plan team leader and specialist in marine and coastal parks, my career included long protected area planning, new area establishment and community tourism development projects in SE Asia, Africa, Latin America, Australia and the Pacific. Also a former US Peace Corps Volunteer fisheries biologist (Nigeria) and staff program manager in natural resources (Paraguay)I have more recently volunteered and consulted in sustainable tourism initiatives (China, Philippines, Brazil), ecotourism circuit development (Panama and Bolivia), ecolodge location and conceptual design (Bolivia) and appropriate ecotourism opportunities for indigenous peoples (Indonesia, Far Eastern Russia, Bolivia, Panama, Viet Nam, Cambodia, Uganda). USAID, WWF, TNC and small NGOs have been my preferred sponsors. Currently residing in the mountains of Colorado, I am involved in scenic byway establishment, heritage conservation, public lands volunteer recreation and wilderness management. And mountain biking (for fun!)
Having lived, traveled and worked professionally in several Mediterranean biomes I continue to be fascinated by their issues and threats. I would be pleased to communicate with others of similar interest, and where helpful provide advice and even volunteer services.
